CheapServ vs DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean is the developer cloud many people start on: a clean dashboard, per-second billing and managed services. Since late 2025 some accounts can pay in stablecoins through Stripe, but not in Bitcoin, Monero or USDT, and not without screening. Here is how the two compare.

  • Crypto at DigitalOceanStablecoins only, through Stripe
  • KYC at DigitalOceanPayment method used to verify identity
  • Crypto at CheapServYes, crypto only
  • KYC at CheapServNone

DigitalOcean, founded in 2012 and now headquartered in Colorado, runs 16 data centers in 13 regions and sells Droplets from $4 a month for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB of RAM and 10 GiB of SSD, billed per second with a monthly cap and invoiced after use. Managed Kubernetes, databases, object storage and hourly GPU Droplets make it a complete platform, and its documentation is among the best in the industry.

Its crypto option is narrow. Stablecoin payments are processed by Stripe, which accepts USDC (plus USDP and USDG for US customers) but not USDT, Bitcoin, Ether or Monero. Adding the method takes a $25 authorisation, Stripe screens the payments for KYC, AML and sanctions, and DigitalOcean says access is “currently limited” and may not be available to every customer. It also uses your payment method to verify your identity and, as a rule, does not refund. CheapServ takes BTC, ETH, XMR and USDT directly, asks for an e-mail address only, and refunds unused balance within 14 days in the coin you paid with.

Prices and policies for DigitalOcean are its public list values as read in October 2026; they may have changed. Check DigitalOcean’s site before deciding. CheapServ figures are live from our catalogue.

FAQ

DigitalOcean vs CheapServ: common questions

All comparisons
Does DigitalOcean accept crypto?

Partly. Since late 2025 some accounts can add a stablecoin payment method processed by Stripe, which supports USDC (and USDP and USDG for US customers) but not USDT, Bitcoin, Ether or Monero. Adding it takes a $25 authorisation that becomes credit, Stripe screens payments for KYC, AML and sanctions, and DigitalOcean says access is currently limited.

Does DigitalOcean require ID verification?

DigitalOcean uses your payment method to verify your identity and can ask for a photo of a government ID when an account is locked or flagged. Stablecoin payments add Stripe’s own KYC screening. CheapServ never asks for documents.

Is CheapServ cheaper than DigitalOcean?

For the same memory, yes: DigitalOcean’s Droplet with 1 vCPU, 2 GiB and 50 GiB is $12 a month; CheapServ’s VPS-1 with 2 GB and 40 GB of NVMe is $3.29, and the 8 GB VPS-4 is $6.99. Per-second billing is cheaper for servers that live only a few hours.

Can I move a Droplet to CheapServ?

Yes. Both are KVM with standard Linux images: order a VPS, copy your data with rsync or restore a backup, switch DNS, then destroy the Droplet. Managed databases and object storage need their own export first.
